![]() When Emily Roberts volunteered to report on events for Target she didn't realise that she would find herself at the first two events celebrating the Community Association's 50th anniversary. Not that she's complaining "I've enjoyed being there, taking pictures, talking to people and being part of this special year" she said. Emily's report on the 50th anniversary celebrations were kick started with a Blitz Ball at the Centre on Sunday 11 March.
The night was a sell out and guests had taken part in true 1940's style, dressing up in some very creative costumes. ![]() Anniversary reporter Emily Roberts
John Hill from Wooburn Green came dressed as an evacuee. Emily found out that John had been evacuated from London to Brighton at the tender age of four and a half. In fact he was evacuated quite a few times because he was unhappy away from his family home. ![]() John Hill remembering back to his days as an evacuee
The highlight of the evening was definitely the entertainment from the Five Star Swing Band. They took us back to the 1940s with a range of classics such as Mr Sandman, White Cliffs of Dover and We'll meet again. There were sing-a-long sessions as well as glorious dance interludes. ![]() Five Star Swing in action
Professional dancers Sara and David from Northwood came especially to be part of the event. It wasn't long before the toes starting tapping and everyone was up to join them on the dance floor. ![]() Sara and David were star dancers
A wartime quiz with a prize kept the audience busy during the intervals. There were prizes for the best costumes and the raffle featured fresh, home grown veg, tins of spam and a rare treat - a bunch of bananas. Emily's next report features the second event in the golden anniversary celebrations. It was a traditional Afternoon Tea Dance which took place at the Community Centre on Easter Monday. Luckily the cold, wet, weather didn't deter the dancers and it was a great turn out. Everyone was in high spirits which created a wonderfully warm and pleasant atmosphere inside. Music and dancing with Ray the DJ playing the perfect combination of classic songs which had everyone onto the floor from the start. Dance styles from the foxtrot to the cha, cha, cha with waltz, quickstep and sequence for good measure provided a great afternoon. Two dancers that particularly stood out were Andy and Teresa from Bourne End, who were definitely dressed for the occasion. ![]() Great dancers Andy and Teresa
In between all the dancing there was time for a dance quiz and a raffle. Well deserved quiz winners Anne and John Collins from Flackwell Heath won a box of Milk Tray choccies to take home! ![]() Quiz winners Anne and John
Of course it wouldn't be a Tea Dance without the quintessentially British tradition of tea, cake and sandwiches. The delicious home made treats went down a storm and were truly earned by each guest after all their lovely dancing. Now we are looking forward to the next event, the Jubilee Picnic on Tuesday 5 June. Hope to see you all there! |
