50th Anniversary Week

BEBCA 50th Anniversary logoCelebratory music will start proceedings and a Finale Party will be a fitting climax. The occasion is the Week of Celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Community Association in 1962. Fifty years ago their aim was to build a Community Centre where local people could get together socially, take part in activities and be the heart of Bourne End.

Dreams came true in 1967 when the Community Centre opened its doors. But the dream took a great deal of effort, fund raising and persuasive talking with councils, councillors and supporting organisations. Anyone involved will say that it was all worthwhile as the Centre developed, expanded, modernised and maintained its position at the heart of the village.

Shostakovich’s exhilarating Festive Overture will be the magnificent start on Sunday October 7 at 7.45pm. Conductor John Timewell and orchestra leader Muriel Carpenter believe that the Annual Concert has a programme tailored for such a special occasion. Soprano Lori Lynn, who has delighted audiences on previous occasions, will sing again this year.

Tchaikovsky’s music, always popular with the Bourne End audience, will be represented by his Capriccio Italien and the orchestra will also be performing Copland’s Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo. All is not feverish excitement as the programme will also include a piece of pure nostalgia, the Glow Worm Idyll by Paul Lincke as well as suites by Debussy and Britten.

On through the week there will be events each evening including an exhibition of old photographs of the local area from Ken Townsend’s extensive collection. On Target Quiz with its buzzer, bullseye and familiar style of questions will find a champion among the four representative teams – Forum Players, Widmoor Reserves, Distaff and the Community Centre.
